TAKE the LAKE 9-3-11

Monday, September 5th, 2011

TAKE the LAKE is an event at Lake Waccamaw, NC each Labor Day week-end, sponsored by The News Reporter, Collier’s Jewelers and other businesses in and around Whiteville, NC.  The events are:   run/walking 15 miles around the lake, biking 15 miles around the lake, swimming from the dam to Dales seafood, and kayaking.  There are no fees to join in this activity, it is fully sponsored.

This is the first year that I have participated, I signed up to walk the 15 miles.  I did some training, apparently not enough.  During my training for the walk, the most distance I walked was 8 miles, and I got sick then.

All along the way, residents of the lake had set up pit stops for water, small snacks, Gatorade and bathroom breaks.  The park rangers were constantly riding up and down the route, making sure everyone was ok.

Saturday, the walk was going really good, I was maintaining my average speed of 3mph (this may seem slow to some.)  After 8 1/2 miles, I still felt good and was ready to finish the walk.  With 4 1/2 miles to go, I got really, really sick, throwing up and dizzy.  I rested for a few minutes and decided I could finish the walk.  I never could get my speed back to 3mph, but I keep going.

At 13 miles completed I stopped to take some Tylenol because my hip was hurting.  I got sick again, just dizzy and nauseous, did not throw up.  I asked to use the bathroom, the lady came to check on me just as as I getting back in the hallway.  As we were walking down the steps, I told her I wanted to rest a bit and continue.  She discouraged me in such a caring way.  The park rangers met us on her walkway and insisted they take me to the finish.  At this point, I knew I could not finish.  Physically I was spent.

Will I try this again, maybe next year.  I learned quite a bit from this walk.  I was advised to eat something salty and sweet about every three miles, this did help.  Next year, I will only drink water when I am thirsty, not just because I think I need to drink to keep myself  hydrated.  I really think the reason I got sick was because I drank too much water.  Another walker said that she quite drinking water because every time she drank,  her stomach did not like it.  I should have stopped drinking when my system told me I had enough fluids.

WALK 8-22-11

Monday, August 22nd, 2011

Finally, I walked my practice path this morning.  It has been over 2 weeks since I walked the path at the Leland Park.  I have walked, but not like I should.  While at Emerald Isle, I measured a distance to walk.  Most days I walked but not as much as I should have.

The “Take the Lake” is less than 2 weeks away.  Will I be ready??? I may or may not be, but I am surely going to give it my best.  I know I must get out of first gear and move on to overdrive.

I have heard some say that they have not even walked any, but plan to participate.  They will probably do better than myself.  Time will tell!

WALK 8/5/11

Friday, August 5th, 2011

I wanted to get an earlier start on my walk than I did yesterday, so I set the clock alarm.  Hard to believe this one, but I woke up before the alarm sounded and got up.  This gave me an hour earlier start than I had planned.  Weather today was overcast but very humid.

I feel that my walk today was very successful.  Thanks to Jeni Colon.   She is my niece and I contacted her by email last night for some training advice.  Jeni is serving in the US ARMY and does a lot of gym workouts and training other than what is required.

Jeni told me to not worry about speed just yet, to work on endurance and try today for the 3 mile walk that I did not achieve yesterday.

As I previously stated:  SUCCESS.  I walked and jogged (very little) the park trail for a total of 4.2 miles in 1 hour and 22 minutes.   The event I am training for is walk and/or run.

Tomorrow may be a different story!!  I wore the same shoes today that I wore yesterday but different type socks, I have a solid blister on my left big toe (did not even know it was there until I pulled off my shoes and socks) and an open blister on my right heel (knew about it very early on).   Will probably change shoes and sock type for tomorrow.

I am really hoping to be at 8 or more miles by the end of next week.

WALK 8/4/11

Thursday, August 4th, 2011

I went to the park this morning for my walk instead of using the treadmill.  I am thinking the treadmill will help condition me but since “Take the Lake” 15 mile walk is around the lake, I really need to walk outside.

I walked the trail 3 times equaling 1.8 miles in 35 minutes.  I started walking at 11:00.  I may have been able to walk farther if I had started earlier.  I need to temper my body to heat as well as endurance to walk the distance.

I am far behind in the training schedule for the walk.  I should be able to walk at least 3 miles briskly in an hour.  My goal is to accomplish this by the end of next week.  I would like to walk  3 1/2 – 3 3/4 miles in an hour, consistently.  Who knows, when I finish training, I may be able to do even better.

WALK #2 8/3/11

Wednesday, August 3rd, 2011

Speed not as good this time, it took me 24:10 minutes to walk a mile.  I am very hot, turned the fan on but in such a hurry to start walking, I did not adjust it so that it would blow on me.  I need to get my priorities in order!!

Maybe, with consistency, I can improve my speed and endurance.  I will soon go to the walking trail at the park and see how I do there.  Walking around the trail 5 times equals walking 3 miles.

I know that I am really going to have to push myself to be ready for “Take the Lake”.

I have not walked since Saturday.  Today, Wednesday, was the day to get back on schedule.
I just walked a MILE in 23.5 minutes.  Yes, I am very pleased.  I think I could have done more if I had not gotten so hot.  Even with the A/C on and a fan blowing on me, I got very, very hot.

If I slowed the pace, I wonder how far I could walk before I felt the need to stop.

I started seriously walking again Thursday.  I do not know the distance I walked Thursday but it was more than around the house.

Friday–about 20 minutes @2.2mph distance .6 mile

Saturday–about 20 minutes @2.2/2.3mph distance  ?? I think .72 mile.  I really can’t remember, I just know it was .1+ more than yesterday.

Questions for you—training for distance walking, is endurance more important than speed or will speed give me the endurance?

What about walking for weight loss, which is better, speed or endurance.

I probably could ask my niece, Jeni Colon, as she is at the gym almost daily.

Comments are welcome.
