I have one more Christmas function and Christmas gatherings for 2009 will be over.
Our daughters and their families came over on Dec. 20th. However, 3 of the grandchildren could not come. Our traditional dinner is usually not one most people have. We always have big dry lima beans cooked with ham hocks, hot sausage, mild sausage, plain rice, picnic shoulder, rice cooked in shoulder broth, potato salad, watergate salad. Dessert varies, this year for dessert we had chocolate cake half iced with dark chocolate and the other half with milk chocolate and Georgia cornbread. For those reading this that may be like I was and not know what Georgia cornbread is, it is a dessert filled with finely chopped pecans giving it a cornbread texture.
December 24th we always go to my husband’s baby sister’s house for pot luck supper and fellowship, then over to his mom’s for the great-grandchildren (22) to get their gifts from Granny and Granny to open hers. All of the family did not come for various reasons. To this function, I took boxed Ranch and Bacon pasta salad, adding mushroom, olives, and more garden peas and a dish of Georgia cornbread.
The Chauncey Family (my brother, myself, nieces and nephews and my brother’s widow and her husband) will gather this Saturday, Jan. 2nd. We will always gather the first Saturday in the new year unless it is New Year’s Day then it will be the following Saturday. My nephew and his wife have graciously agreed to host us EVERY year. I am so glad they are doing this. This, too, will be pot luck. I am taking creamed corn and watergate salad. I may decide to take another dish but have not fully made up my mind.
I am hoping to establish the Sunday afternoon before Christmas as our family gathering. Time will tell how this turns out.
